On Wednesday 19 March, John Brittain – former Master Baker from Shefford, taught 30 children in teams of three, to make Easter Biscuits. Previously John had taught the oldest children at the school to make Harvest Plait loaves and the middle school to make mince pies at Christmas. This time it was the turn of the youngest children aged 5 to 6 years. Included in the group were three East Garston children: Caitlyn, Sania, and Brooke.
After watching a demonstration by John, the children competently rubbed the butter into the flour and made the pastry for the biscuits. They were amazingly expert and as is very often the case, accomplished far more than we adults think is possible at their age. They rolled the pastry and cut out their biscuits, which were then cooked in the school kitchen oven.
The finished biscuits, which were of a very high standard, were judged by John, who presented the trophy donated by him, to the winning team. The children then carried their precious biscuits on plates into the school hall, where the Headteacher, Mrs Gaynor Zimmerman led a short assembly. The Revd Tony Cumberlidge, an Associate Governor of the school, conducted a short service of prayers and blessed the children’s biscuits, after which 30 happy children proudly took biscuits home for tea with their families.
