Jean Green (nee Denton)

July 31st 1916 - January 18th 1994

Jean lived all her life in East Garston, loving the village and the surrounding countryside, never wishing to move away. Jean was born during the 1st World War on 31st July 1916, at Baggers Barn, the third child of Charles and Edith Kate Denton.  Her parents farmed in the village, and although the family moved several times, it was always to another dwelling within East Garston.

Jean attended the village school along with her older brother Les and her younger brother Roy. Her older sister, Madeline had by this time left the small village school. She often spoke of her time at East Garston school, remembering nature walks and learning about the countryside. At the age of eleven, Jean went to the County Girls Grammar School in Newbury (now amalgamated with the Boys Grammar School and known as St. Barts).  After leaving school, Jean was employed by Searles, hairdressers in Newbury, where she began her apprenticeship. She loved the work and hoped to make it her career. Sadly this was not to be as in 1936 she developed tuberculosis, and spent many months in hospital in London.

Fortunately she was one of the lucky few then, who recovered, but she was not well enough to pursue her career. She returned home and worked for her father. They were now living at Parsonage House, where the family farmed.  It was during the 2nd World War, in May 1943 that Jean married Charlie Green, and they settled into married life living at Mabberleys. Together they worked long hours in the dairy supplying milk for the village.

Then later, after having a bottling machine installed, the old milk chums were abandoned and milk was supplied in bottles. In later years, milk was supplied to them from the Milk Marketing Board.  In 1963, Jean and Charlie sold Mabberleys and moved into their new home, March House (built by Jean's brother Roy), where they continued the milk retail business. They delivered milk to East Garston and the surrounding villages tor over 35 years.

Jean and Charlie had two children. Tony and Julie (Godden). Julie has also always lived in East Garston.  After Charlie's death in 1983, Jean moved again, but still within the village, to Burfords, where she lived  until her death in January 1994.  Jean loved the countryside. She would spend hours in her garden, and took great joy from caring for her plants and flowers.
