Since
taking on this web site I have had the pleasure of attending many
functions that I normally wouldn't have done previously. Some
I wouldn't have qualified for and some I just wouldn't have had
much interest in. However, the apparent, and indeed, very
welcome resurgence of the old community spirit that once existed
here by the bucket load, has put a whole new slant on things.
Talking to others I find that I am not alone in noticing the many
positive changes that are taking place within our village community.
Long may it continue.

It goes without saying that functions need people. People
to organize and arrange them - and people to attend and enjoy
them. In 2005 Alan and Wendy Money decided to
do just that for the over 60's living in East Garston by arranging
a Christmas party for them. The support they received from
that particular section of our community was instrumental
in encouraging them to do the same again this year.

Well over 40 parishioners came together
to enjoy a Christmas lunch for the over 60's in our village
hall - This year in 2006, a choice of menu was offered along
with wine, mince pies, Christmas crackers...in fact, you
name it, it was there. The Christmas tree for the occasion
was donated by our local agricultural firm "PJS"
so may I on behalf of Alan ,Wendy, Martin and everyone in
attendance....just thank Pete and Diana Smith for their
generosity and help.

We
all sat down to a remarkable traditional Christmas menu of
roast turkey with all the trimmings and Christmas pudding,
the vegetarians among us were not to be forgotten with a choice
of nut cutlets and vegetables followed by puddings of their
choice. As I sat back and listened to the chattering,
the friendly banter and perhaps above all, the laughter, I
quickly realised that this was more than a Christmas lunch.
To me it represented one of the true meanings of Christmas.
If it was the hope of Alan, Wendy, Deana, Martin
and the team that a community can come together in this
way to support and give - not just presents but goodwill to
each other, then surely they would not have been disappointed
Thankyou and congratulations to you all

Some of the more observant of you will have noticed
that my good friend Wendy doesn't appear to have
a solo spot of her own in the organizers section.
Well you see, she dared me to publish - as she put
it "That picture of me with those bottles
of wine"
I was promised there would be many forms of retribution
if I did... Some of
them sounded like quite good fun. So
I now look forward to our next meeting with anticipation
- and just a little - trepidation.
Seriously though Wendy, well done to you to Alan
to Martin - and indeed to all of you involved for
the way in which you organized and carried off this
very enjoyable afternoon. Everyone I spoke to had
nothing but praise for all of you, One chap told
me - you are assets the village has needed for a
very long time. You can't say fairer than that,
can you?
