 At East Garston Church 2011

             Baptism of Kate Brooks

A very happy family gathering took place on Sunday 6 February 2011 when Kate Brooks, 14 month old daughter of Vikki and Richard Brooks, was Christened by The Revd Nigel Sands. Vikki is a member of the Parochial Church Council at East Garston Church and plays a prominent part in the Young Families Group.

Richard and Vikki’s son, 4 year old James, was Christened in October 2007 by The Revd Tony Cumberlidge. Sadly Tony was taken to hospital 2 days before Kate’s Christening, with a severe infection following surgery carried out in 2008, though it had been planned that he would give the reading and the address at Kate’s Baptism. In the event, Richard’s father read John 3. 1- 8, which tells of the presence of the Holy Spirit at Baptism, which like the wind, cannot be seen. Tony’s address would have illustrated this theme with the Christina Rosetti poem “Who has seen the wind ?”

Forty people – family, Godparents and friends including some delightful children, with the Revd Sand’s encouragement, entered enthusiastically into the service. Afterwards a celebration Christening Lunch took place in the Village Hall, with the whole family joining together to cook and serve superb food and wine.

The beautiful Christening cake, the table decorations and the flowers in church were all on a spring-like white and pale green theme.  Kate is the fortieth person to be baptised at East Garston since The Revd Tony Cumberlidge came to East Garston in the Autumn of 2004. It was a joy to be present at such a special family occasion. - Thank you Richard and Vikki.
