Scarecrows

12th of September 2010

The annual scarecrow competition has become part of the run-up to fete day here in East Garston. Not only does it provide a colourful lead into fete weekend, it also enables anyone to take part in this community event without having to leave the confines of their garden, should they not wish too.
Although the number of scarecrow submissions turned out to be lower than last year, the standard and theme variation most certainly wasn't. We saw everything from a snowman to the grim reaper, from super heroes to a scarecrow who had simply "Gone to Lunch" when the judges called, leaving the crows to look after his wooden support, and to answer any questions the judges might have.
Judges Rosie and Phil Aggs inspect Frosty the snowman as he sits amongst the flowers in Bill and Jean Cox's garden. Last year you may remember we had two independent judges from Ramsbury brought in to expediate the task of choosing category winners. Well this year we went a little further afield in our quest to deliver unbiased fairness. Rosie and Phil are on an extended visit to the UK but they actually live in Australia, so in a way, our humble scarecrow competition has taken on international status.
George Rabbitts' Lorne Hill Reaper kindly offers Phil directions back to the Millennium Field where the final decisions will be made.
After double checking that nothing had been missed, Dawn leaves our judges to their deliberations. Phil and Rosie's parting comments were 'If any E.G. scarecrows feel like doing the journey they would be pleased to welcome them in Australia for a Scarecrow Convention'!!  Our thanks go to our two judges for their willingness to enter into the spirit of things, and for a job well done. We hope in some small way, that we here in East Garston have contributed positively to your trip to the UK, and that you both enjoyed the "Scarecrow" experience.  Thanks Rosie - Thanks Phil.
