Village Race 1999

The Village Race - December 31st 1999

The road race around the village was, many years ago, a traditional event that was held prior to the football dinner every year. As time moved on, the event itself  sank into oblivion in much the same way that many of our old community traditions do in these modern times. Then in 1995 someone had the great idea of reviving the race to be included as part of the 50th anniversary V.E Day celebrations.

Since May 1995, the race has put in an appearance on several occasions, often fronting the annual village feté. The photos displayed here are from the pre-millennium race, this being the first [I think] to include fancy dress runners alongside the more competitive members of our community.

Gordon and Colin in full flight crossing the bridge near the Old Forge.  Meanwhile back at the finish line, Paul scans the approach road for the first sign of a winner, however, I'm not quite sure how long James reckoned his trip around the houses would take, he certainly appears to be well stocked.........and with the right sort of supplies..!!

Two stunning black and white prints from the 1950s.Your race winner here is Eric Hobbs. Meanwhile prior to the race, Roy Denton as bookie for the 1955 race, takes bets on the runners of the day. My thanks to Ivor Denton and Ray Hobbs for supplying these photos.

As they say in all the best news programmes.......'And Finally''......

Bringing a smile to everyone's face, the late John Petty crosses the line to complete the race in his own unique style
