The Waldrons

East Garston History

History doesn't always have to stretch back into the very distant past. More often than not - modern history is of greater interest as it can portray events that the reader/viewer, is familiar with, may have been connected with, or even lived through. This section chronicles in pictures, the transformation of part of our village - from a redundant coal yard to a then, new housing development. - "The Waldrons"
North View as it was in September 1997
Rogers Lane 1997 - when it really was a country lane
The old coal yard itself covered an area stretching from Humphreys Lane down the hill to Back Street. Domestic fuel supply had been a Green family business for as long as I can remember, Initially Fred Green, and then, when he retired - his son Richard took over the reigns.

In the mid to late 90s - The site was sold and the area became ripe for re-development.

The War memorial photographed from the rear of North View

All the above photos were Taken in September 1997. One of the things I find quite striking to see, is just how many trees were in existence back then, photos from a time when we accepted trees the way nature designed them, before pollarding (Tree Hacking) became fashionable.

January 1998 - Two views similar to those at the head of this page. The area around North View has now been cleared, and
Rogers Lane is
devoid of its green hedgerow, becoming distinctly urban in its appearance.

February 1998 - North View ( Now 2 the Waldrons ) gets its old ungainly extensions removed, bringing it into line with current development plans. Removal of this side extension facilitated the building of a house to the left of the property by providing enough ground space between North View and the site boundary. ~ Just a point, but look at the weather we had for part of February 1998 ~ Glorious days.

Construction moved on at a pace and in a very short time, the uniquely styled estate took shape. The original plans were in all probability for an estate of clones - with all buildings being of the same design. But extensive representations from the various council organizations and their respective councilors, ensured we were fortunate in that we ended up with a collection of properties that were diverse and non uniform in their appearance. Even thatch was introduced on the new build, fitting in with the village and its surroundings most appropriately.
Today "The Waldrons" has become fully established and blends in with the village seamlessly. All traces of the old coal yard are now totally eradicated, except of course  - " No.2 the Waldrons " - which still retains the look and feel of its former life as - " Northview ".
