A Big Weekend

East Garston's Open Gardens and Parish Plan Launch July 2010

Jump to the big lunch

This weekend consisted of three separate events, all brought together in one package. Saturday afternoon saw nine village gardens opened to the public, with the exercise repeated again on Sunday. Saturday was a bright sunny day and showed the various gardens off beautifully, but unfortunately on Sunday, as is often the case here in England - the weather wasn't quite so obliging.

The principal idea of opening the various gardens was obviously to view and admire the work of  East Garston's many gardeners.
But The Old Stable went a step futher, and presented an opportunity for visitors to buy many of the plants held within.
The photos above, all taken on the day, are representitive of the type of cottage gardens that fill East Garston with colour year after year.

Parish Plan Launch Party

The second event of the day took place in the evening of Saturday and was a launch party for the newly finished ParishPlan. It was in April 2008 at the annual Parish Meeting when it was agreed to produce a Parish Community Plan. The Parish Council were keen to involve other residents outside of the council and at the Annual Meeting, a number of residents agreed to take it on.
Photographic albums of an earlier village project, taken eight years ago were on display for all to enjoy. Eight years may not sound that long, but many  in attendance were amazed to see themselves as they were back then, and even more amazed at just how much some of them had changed. The Album Val and Monty are looking through, covered the project " A Day in the Life of East Garston" and all photos within it will be scanned for eventual presentation on this website.
Following a few words of introduction from Martyn Wright (Group Chairman)  the plan was officially launched. Martyn thanked all who had contibuted the the successful production of the Community Plan and expressed his thanks and gratitude to all who had taken the time out to attend the launch this evening.
A special screening of The 1947 film "A Quiet Weekend" took place during the launch party. The film, directed by Warrick Ward was shot in East Garston, Chilton Foliat and Lower Denford.   It provides a unique moving glimpse into the way East Garston looked 63 years ago.
