The Village race

13th September 2009

The annual "round the village race" is now as much a part of fete day as the fete itself. We can always rely on a colourful turnout for this event, even though many of us know full well that the only way we could possibly win would be for everyone else to fall in the river or take a wrong turning......But of course, it's the taking part that counts ~ so well done to all who entered.
This year there were again entries that crossed the generations, including the youngest and oldest contestants working as a team.
70 year old Bill Cox became the power plant for his two very young Grandchildren.  Spiderman (Chris Wilder) although being odds on favourite to win, still found time to offer a few words of advice to a young Mr Incredible ( Jenson Gibbard)

At 1pm the runners were dispatched ~ giving us onlookers, a few minutes to chat amongst ourselves
before cheering their return in a few minutes time.

All eyes were trained on the western end of Back Street as a distinct red and blue clad figure was spotted in the distance.
Our category winners were Tegan Gibbard, Christopher Wilder and William Highnett.
The presentations were made by East Garston Cricket Club Captain, Mick Highnett

Congratulations to all three winners, and indeed to all who took part. ~ I think you are all winners. The race is run in good spirits and provides an opportunity for families to take part as a whole, and to don fancy dress costumes should they so wish. It also provides a great deal of fun for everyone, as they take in the antics of some of our village comedians. Spiderman was so pleased with his win that he celebrated in the only way spiderman could. ~ He left us the way he arrived ~ via the social club roof.......!!
